The Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education has approved a full rebuild of San Rafael Elementary School in a decisive 6–1 vote, marking a historic moment for our neighborhood and for public education in West Pasadena.
The approved plan represents an approximately $128 million investment in a modern, state-of-the-art campus, funded through Measure O and Measure R bond programs. This decision reflects years of advocacy from parents, neighbors, and community leaders who have consistently emphasized the importance of maintaining and strengthening a public elementary school in our part of the city.
San Rafael Elementary has long faced challenges due to aging infrastructure, accessibility limitations, and deferred maintenance. District officials have concluded that a full rebuild is the most effective way to deliver a safe, modern learning environment aligned with current educational standards.
Just as importantly, this vote sends a clear signal: San Rafael Elementary has a strong future. For years, the school has faced uncertainty, including past discussions of consolidation or closure amid declining district enrollment. As the only remaining public elementary school serving West Pasadena, its continued presence is vital to maintaining access to public education in our community.
What Happens Next?
Current timelines anticipate construction beginning in summer 2027, with students temporarily relocated to Allendale Elementary for approximately two years during the rebuild. While this transition will require planning and coordination, it ultimately paves the way for a significantly improved campus.
The Work Ahead
With the Board’s approval secured, the focus now turns to implementation and to ensuring that community voices remain part of the process. We encourage neighbors and families to stay informed, participate in upcoming discussions, and help shape the future of this important neighborhood school.
Additionally, community members should be aware that soil remediation work is scheduled for summer 2026 following the discovery of contamination in portions of the lower playground after the Eaton Fire. This work will proceed ahead of the larger rebuild project. You can find more information about the soil remediation project here.
