The Pasadena Police Department needs more officers. According to a report by the International Association of Police Chiefs, a city with a population of 100,000-249,999 should have a ratio of 1.9 sworn officers for every 1,000 residents.

Pasadena’s 2010 census population is 137,122. Today Pasadena has approximately 230 sworn officers. That places Pasadena’s ratio at 1.68. In order to increase the ratio to 1.9, Pasadena would need to hire 30 additional officers.

As the city’s population increases so too should the number of police officers along with fire fighters and paramedics. In order to effectively police the city; the neighborhoods, the parks, and business districts, plus perform community based policing and programs, more officers are needed. Asking the departments to do more with less is a recipe for disaster.
